The Tale of Desperaux
By Kate DiCamillo
The Tale of Desperaux tells the fascinating tale of a tiny mouse that is quite different from the other mice in the King's castle where he lives. However, he is not afraid to be different. From the day he was born, he stood out because of his miniscule size, and because he opened his eyes too soon. The other mice of the castle doubt that Desperaux will survive, but still try to teach him their ways. Desperaux is more interested in reading and exploring the castle, and soon falls in love with the princess. He is sent by the other mice to face a dreadful fate in the dungeon because of his lack of conformance to their ways. He is rescued by the jail keeper, and soon discovers an evil plot to kidnap the princess. He thus embarks on an amazing journey to rescue her, for he wishes to be like her knight in shinning armor.
Kate DiCamillo creates a fascinating world in the King's castle, where the story takes place. Readers are drawn into the many facets of the castle and soon find themselves believing in every fantastic element of the story. Although Desperaux is a tiny mouse, readers can easily identify with his character. He is different from others, at times rejected, but bravely fights for the princess, who he loves deeply. A powerful theme of good conquering evil dominates the story, with illustrations of darkness and light as the story moves along. The story is told quite simply for young readers to understand, but keeps readers interested throughout the entire book. This book would be an excellent option for reading aloud.
