The First Part Last
By Angela Johnson
The First Part Last tells the story of a sixteen-year-old boy named Bobby dealing with fatherhood. His girlfriend became pregnant, and he ended up caring for the baby, Feather, after she was born. The story is told by alternating between the past and the present as Bobby reveals different aspects of his story. Reading the story from the male point-of-view gives a completely new perspective of teen pregnancy to readers. Bobby's character is very believable, and reading about his situation leads readers to realize that it could have happened to anyone.
Angela Johnson reveals a great deal of the emotions that Bobby experiences as he faces fatherhood at such a young age. Her story reflects events that are true to life. His situation does not resolve itself like one would expect in a fairy tale, but the resolution is satisfactory and offers hope. The story takes place in New York City, a setting which resembles that of many young readers. The topic is certainly relevant to teenage readers, and gives a true reflection of the reality of teen pregnancy without becoming preachy or imposing the author's own opinions.
The First Part Last is an excellent book to share with young adults who may be facing many of the same feelings and emotions that Bobby and his girlfriend experience. I highly recommend this book for teenagers. It offers a true to life perspective of teen pregnancy without losing hope. Angela Johnson magnificently develops all of the characters as she shows how one young couple's pregnancy affects everyone that is a part of their lives.
