My Friend Rabbit, by Eric Rohmann

My Friend Rabbit

By Eric Rohmann

My Friend Rabbit tells a delightful story about friendship, patience and loyalty.  In the story, Rabbit plays with his friend, Mouse, and a toy airplane.  When the toy airplane is caught in a tree, Rabbit creatively attempts to recover it, and that's when the excitement begins.  Despite many mishaps, Rabbit never gives up.  He keeps a positive attitude and keeps trying until he succeeds in recovering his friend's airplane.

The illustrations tell most of the story, and the expressions on the characters' faces fantastically portray their emotions.  Rohmann brings the animals to life, and shows the different personalities of each and their distinct reactions to Rabbit as he involves them in his situation.  The illustrations allow for you to predict what is going to happen next, and the story flows wonderfully across all of the pages of the book.  Rohmann makes use of the wide pages of the book to demonstrate Rabbit's struggle to reach the airplane.  The shape and size of the book allow for Rohmann to display Rabbit's constant movement and the proportionate size of all the animals.

My Friend Rabbit has wonderful lessons to teach.  Rabbit and Mouse demonstrate the significance of friendship and loyalty.  Rabbit exemplifies persistence and creativity.  Mouse portrays patience and understanding.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.  I particularly like Rohmann's portrayal of the hippo, who remains oblivious to the events occurring around him as he sleeps contentedly.
